Shomana’s role is to engage with the wider Keighley and BAME communities, and to ensure activities are accessible and appropriate for all.
Shomana said “My first impression of Dementia Friendly Keighley is that it lives up to its name, everyone is so friendly and it’s lovely to be part of such a welcoming team. In the coming weeks and months I hope to build up a relationship with the local community, and to ensure that people know what we have to offer”.
DFK Manager, Julie Lintern said “It’s great to welcome Shomana to the team, and hope her appointment will enable us to raise awareness and understanding of Dementia and the support available to those living with the condition, as well as the help available to their carers.”
Dementia Friendly Keighley was able to once again open its doors to the public, after being closed due to the recent lockdown. Throughout the various restrictions, DFK have created a number of opportunities to engage and support the people most in need, although nothing is as welcome as face to face chats, albeit with face coverings.
Helen Charters, the Information Centre Coordinator said “It’s been a fantastic few weeks back in the centre, with some emotional appointments. I was a little nervous about returning after 12 months working from home, however, it felt so good to be seeing people face to face again. DFK has put in a number of measures to ensure everyone who visits the centre is safe at all times, from regular cleaning, to the supply of face coverings and hand sanitiser.
We want families affected by Dementia who need information and support, to know that they can book an appointment and get the help they really need.”
The Dementia Friendly Keighley Information & Support Centre is currently open Monday to Friday, between 10:30am and 1:30pm, by appointment only. The helpline is still available 7 days a week between 10am and 2pm.
